8 Top Must-Use Tools To Boost Your Web Development Workflow

The web development workflow consists of things from information gathering, planning, content writing, designing with the help of website builder tool, content assembly, coding, testing & review, etc.

Web development is a lot of work and many teams work together to accomplish the act. In such a scenario, there are many tools that can boost its working efficiency.

There are many categories of tools such as:

  • Javascript Libraries
  • Frontend frameworks
  • Web application frameworks
  • Task runners
  • Languages/platforms
  • Databases
  • CSS preprocessors
  • Code editors
  • Markdown editors
  • Git services
  • Web servers
  • API tools
  • Local development tools
  • Collaboration tools
  • Web site speed tools
  • Website development communities
  • Website development newsletters

Each of the categories can be further subdivided into sub-categories. In this article, we will discuss API tools and collaboration tools used in web development. It is with the help of these tools that teams can stay in touch with each other and collaborate in a better way even if they are not sharing the same location.

Slack

With this tool, you can create channels so that you can discuss different aspects of the same project. Every single message is indexed which makes it easy to recover it for later reference. It eliminates the need to have a different chat group for every single topic. There is a flexibility to add the third-party tools to it or else develop your own API. It can be used for internal purposes as well as for communities at large. It is possible to set reminders, schedule meetings on this app eliminating the need for different programs. It offers a free plan and the user has the ability to subscribe. Once subscribed, you can search for all messages.

Trello

Trello is a project management tool that can manage up to 10 members. It is a free application and can be used in a variety of ways for managing workflows. Just imagine how difficult it would be for a sole proprietor to call each and every employee and assign him the task and also to keep track of the tasks which are completed. Trello can be used by a person who is in charge of multiple tasks. He can add the employees and prepare separate boards for them to assign them activities. For eg, you can have separate boards for content writers, SEO, web developers, etc. In each board, you can have a set of employees and assign them tasks. Boards in Trello are similar to the departments in an organization. It is possible to access the board to which you belong. But in an organization, many things depend on one another. A content writer might want to refer some article for SEO, in that case, there is a facility to add the member to it so that the concerned person gets a notification about it. You can use different colors for different boards for easy recognition and even labels of different colors are available for ease of use. To assign a task to someone you just to add a card, add labels, tag members if you wish and can move a card by dragging and dropping it once the task is accomplished.

Redash

Redash is an open-source tool built for teams to query, visualize and collaborate. It works with any data source you might need and facilitates to raise a query from anywhere. It can be integrated with MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, ElasticSearch and much more. It can be integrated with Slack so that you don’t need to see your dashboard daily. You can continue to stay on the Slack group and stay updated.

Zapier

If you want a tool that can push data from Facebook to Google spreadsheets then Zapier would be the best option for you. Zapier makes the task easy by integrating more than 2000 apps. It is possible to create automated processes and workflows which can save time and no coding is required, which is a plus point. With Zapier you can easily create Trello card from Google responses. No need to see every response manually and feed the same to your computer. So if you want to avoid redundant development projects, bugs try using Zapier.

Draw.io

It is one of the free sketch tools available which allows you to edit and open a diagram created by anyone if you have permission for doing that. It is a great tool for prototyping, mock-ups and architecture design. Draw.io offers many components for easy insertion into the sketch-like flow charts, Venn diagram, charts, etc

All-In-One Messenger

In the digital age, we often use different apps for different purposes and for different people. It includes 46 applications ranging from WhatsApp, Twitter to Skype and Google mail. As a user, we might not be using all of the 46 apps but I am sure each one of us uses at least 5 to 6 different apps. In such a case, keeping track of all apps, getting notifications and downloading them on a device becomes a tiresome task. Rather than that by downloading this single app, the user can get the benefit of all apps and get notified whenever required.

BitBucket

It is yet another collaboration tool similar to Github. The only difference is that it offers five repositories free. BitBucket can be mainly used to control and manage the code versions. Also, if you are a kind of organization that has multiple departments then you can add this tool in your list. It will easily integrate with third-party tools for code inspection. It easily integrates with the Slack tool and makes it super easy for the user just to push the tasks or notifications. It also integrates with Trello, Jira Software, Confluence, and Bamboo. The amazing feature of this app is the ‘code aware search for BigBucket cloud’. It is especially useful to the teams who have large code bases or many repos. The only point of caution is that if you want to add private code repositories beyond five collaborators then you need to purchase a paid plan.

Postman

Testing the APIs developed by others might not be always possible. So also, the APIs require collaboration between the producer and the consumer. Consumers need it to stay updated on the changes made whereas producers need it as feedback from the consumers. There had to be someone to fill this gap and the Postman tool exactly serves this purpose. This tool is free for the solo developers, but for team collaboration you need a paid plan.

CONCLUSION:

So depending on your need you can decide which tool will suit your organization. Please let us know if you ever need any assistance in setting up these platforms and we can help!

The amount of energy that is consumed as a result of this is only next to the level consumed by the industry of aviation. The amount of greenhouse gases as a result of this is enormous. It is important how these three functions and how to write each.

  • Pages- Pages include the content of your website that does not change over time. These hold the static information of your website and examples include ‘Contact’ page or ‘About Us’ page. Pages usually feature on the navigation bar of websites.

It is important to remember that the navigation menu should be clean and easy to operate. Confusing navigation menus, often avert visitors.

Extras

There are some extras that you need to take care of in order to ensure highest profitability of your website. Some of these extras include:

  • Adjusting the settings- The settings area in your WordPress contains useful tools which can be utilized to better your website. Things like time zone, handling of comments, format of dates, themes etc. are handled by these settings tools, and can help you achieve the desired results to make your website perfect. You should go through every single tool available in the settings and tweak them according to your needs. They are all user-friendly and easy to understand. If you find a tool too confusing to use, you can always come back to it at a later date.

Ways Web Designers Can Add Value to the Open Source Community

Edwin Deponte takes over our blog this month to discuss the open source community. Thanks Edwin!

Web designs in the Philippines and elsewhere are one of the crucial factors that can either make or break your website. With numerous designs to choose from, it is indeed one of the hardest decisions that any developer and designer must make. Good thing there are softwares like open source that can aid them to choose what kind of design that they can do.

Whether you are a web developer or a web designer, here are some of the things that you can add value to the open source community.

Create collaboration

It is indeed true that in an open source community, you will never feel the professional vibe. Instead, what the open source community provides is collaboration with one another. With this in mind, what it can greatly offer its new and old members is the opportunity to have that sense of individuality and creativity – which in turn, what makes them as one.

However, being involved in this community does not mean that they compete with one another. Hence, it brings them all together and binds them to create another design that will help both present and future community members as its main goal is to give solution – to them and to their clients.

Share unlimited resources

Given that the open source community helps one another to craft new creations and bring more solutions, these efforts will result to having unlimited resources from the community. This is because each member will develop and enhance each product, which in turn, will help to support existing users and customers. In short, if a solution is needed, the chances are high that someone will create and develop it.

Promote freedom

Another thing that makes the open source community a great place for web developers and web designers is that it is free for all to use. With this being said, there are a lot of developers and designers that use this software – which in turn, gives a lot of room for flexibility. If there are moments that you are not satisfied with your current developer’s work, there are other developers and designers that can do the work for you. However, just be careful to whom you will give your work to. Always make sure that you get the right one so that you will avoid hassles and delays in the long run.

Practice flexibility

Since the open source community is free for the public, this means that it does not have the limitations and constraints for web developers and web designers to customize it the way they like it. With this in mind, personalizing and configuring the design and the codes means that you can freely customize it to your liking has no limit. As a result, you can configure it as much as you want.

Reduce costs

The open source community is, of course, free of costs as it is open for all to use. The only thing that it will cost you is the effort and labor that you exert in it. With this being said, you can allocate your funds to something else – whether it may be a brand new computer, the latest software that you can use, or with an expert developer and designer that can do the job.

Key Takeaway

The open source software is indeed a great and effective tool that you can use in order for you to create the design that you want – from websites to web designs. For this reason, it is a must that you have this in your arsenal to ensure that you will have unlimited ideas and knowledge about websites and web designs that you can customize and modify.

Cheap Websites vs Affordable Websites

At Design Web, we pride ourselves on our ability to provide the most affordable websites in Louisville. That doesn’t however mean the same thing as the cheapest websites in Louisville. What is the difference between a cheap website and an affordable one?

A cheap website is just that – cheap – made from cheap materials with only the most basic functions. You might ask what do you mean by cheap materials? Aren’t websites just a little bit of information online? Well, the short answer is that they are and they aren’t. While your site may be just a few files, it depends on a variety of support items to exist. Hosting for example; hosting is where your website lives. Think of hosting like a storefront you lease for your website, just like a business storefront. Different hosts have different service options. Some hosts offer shared space, which can reduce your cost, but comes at a price. Shared hosting is fine if you have a few good neighbors, but cheap webdesign services tend to overcrowd their hosting with any site that comes along. What does that mean for you? Unfortunately, that means your visitors will get turned away more often.

Another aspect of cheap web development is speed. All it takes to lose sales and valuable clients is 3 seconds. Studies show that if your site doesn’t come up in 3 seconds, you can lose up to 70% of your visitors. Even the most loyal customer will move on to another site or service if they think your site takes forever to load. Why is overcrowded hosting bad? Much like an overcrowded apartment building, an overcrowded hosting provider means you will always be competing for resources, resources like bandwidth. Bandwidth is a lot like parking spaces and road frontage for your business. You only have so much bandwidth to serve your customers before service starts slowing down and space is filled up and people start getting turned away. With overcrowded hosting, you also run the risk of being taken down by any negative site that shares your network/IP neighborhood. Like having a fire in an apartment, the entire building has to be evacuated until the issue is solved. If one site on your shared host gets taken down or attacked, all sites on that server could potentially be taken down. It could be down for a few minutes, or it could be down for days. Once your site goes down there is nothing to do but wait.

Another aspect of cheap websites is what type of underlying CMS or coding that is used. Most businesses do very well working on a Drupal or WordPress website, which are fairly easy to maintain and set up. Cheap websites are typically set up on a Squarespace, Weebly, or Wix platform, which is not beneficial to the client. These websites are poor for SEO, or search engine optimization. This means that you will rank much lower than a similar site built on a professional CMS platform if you go with a drag-and-drop website generator. These sites also charge monthly for their services, sometimes meaning that you pay more over time than you would if you went with a one-time payment for a professional, affordable website. Lastly, these websites never give you ownership of the site. If your third-party site generator suddenly goes bankrupt, you will lose your website. If you decide to move over to another hosting company, you also lose your website as it is non-transferable.

There is a lot to be risked in going with cheap over affordable. At Design Web, we pride ourselves as having the most affordable websites in Louisville. We never cheap out, and the websites that we create are just as good as the big name agencies. We have professional web developers who can match, function-for-function or design-for-design, any website created by the big name agencies, at half the cost. The difference is our low overhead. We don’t have huge art pieces in our lobby, or top-shelf liquor bars in our office. Sorry, that also means no pool tables. What we do offer are the best websites in town at a fraction of the cost. Come find out more about our amazing websites and get a quote today!
