The CSS Display Property

For many, the designs and implementations behind the face of a website are baffling to look at. Indeed, even for somebody with experience of HTML and CSS, it can still be quite a grueling process to get used to. A key asset in manipulating a website to look just as you need is using commands like margins, and display types. Display types are a massive part of the design process and helps keep everything exactly where you need it to be.

This, in turn, allows for much more creative designs for your website, allowing you to move things around to the part of the page it can be most effective. However, like just about every other element out there in coding, even the slightest mistake can cause you many hours of stress.

There are various different forms of the display command that you can put into action. They all allow varying looks to your page and where things will end up, and knowing what each of them does is very important to getting the look and feel you are after.

display: inline (inline-flex, inline-block, inline-table)

Inline does exactly what you might imagine it would. It effectively keeps everything on the flow of one line, rather than pushing it down to the next line. For example, this piece of code: li {display: inline}, will create a list which will stay on the same line as each other rather than take it to the next line for each part of the list. Traditionally, lists run stacked on top of each other rather than across the page, but this helps you keep everything on one line.

It also keeps any other elements directly in line with the list – things like bold text or text that has an emboldened box around it. You can still add margins and other elements to this type of display, but it will only move horizontally.

You could also include an inline-block command. This creates a changeable height and width parameter, as well as the ability to use margins. This makes it especially useful for creating interesting graphics using just the web features given to you, rather than graphics or other elements.

display: block

Block display creates a standalone box away from other parts of the design. It will fit the entire width given creating a box, with a line break both between and before. This allows you to create a padding and margin for the box. A common example of a block usage would be a heading on a webpage.

Typically, it will sit with a significant amount of space between it and anything else. Sometimes, it may have a clear graphical highlight added.

display: none

This total removes the element from the page entirely. It’s not available to click on, and won’t be visible to any of the viewers of the page. This can be useful for switching out parts of the website you aren’t sure about, but don’t want to remove entirely at present. It will still load in the code, so if you display:none a large element, you site will still have a high load time.

display: table (table-caption, table-cell, table-column, table-footer, table-header, table-row)

This creates a table layout, and you can use a wide variety of different results like the table option. Tables allow you to have a lot more control on the positioning and overall style of a part of your website, allowing you to quickly and easily create professional looking layouts and tables without having to undergo anything too arduous.

It effectively forces things which aren’t tables to act like one. This might be quite a rare use of the display feature but it’s still there just in case you need it.

Over the next few weeks, we will go into other aspects of web development, including various CSS3 and HTML elements. Remember, the Design Web can help you with your web design and development. We not only build sites, we can also teach you how to develop sites yourself with one-on-one personal training on location or via teleconference.

The CSS Float Property

As the proud owner of a shiny website, you won’t want to leave yourself in a position where your site becomes a burden to you. Unfortunately, sometimes a lack of patience or knowledge when making coding a website can lead to problems with future maintenance. There are also some cases where certain designs just do not handle some types of coding very well.

The CSS float property is one of these exact issues. It gives you the chance to float an image into a specific part of the website, allowing text and the like to float around it. This can be useful, of course, for creating certain effects –but if used incorrectly, it can become a bit of a nightmare.
Yes, float does have specific uses in the web development world BUT it has to be used in specific instances. Unfortunately, many designers simply don’t do this and it can leave websites looking cheap, especially on larger displays, and make future maintenance frustrating. A fine alternative to float is inline-block, and it works the majority of the time, doing the exact same job you wanted with float, without the headache that comes with!
An image which is floating left will stay to the left side of the page, with all text appearing on its right. This can be useful for certain designs, and will look quite cool when used in the right context. When used effectively, a floated image gives context to the words on the page, allowing your page to flow much better.

However, it can cause significant problems with the overall layout of the site as mentioned above. For example, here are some of the most common times that float will be used on a web page:

  • Creating a unique web layout that is going to be made almost entirely of images – ala Windows 8
  • Getting the parameters just right in small sections of the website like a user panel
  • Floating any form of image, paragraph, division or list (presuming your design can handle it)

However, you shouldn’t start messing around with float if you aren’t 100% sure how your website should look in the end. Although some pages are created entirely from using the float property to manipulate the design, others feel less comfortable trying such a maneuver – trying to design this yourself without the relevant experience is going to cause you a lot of problems.

You need to get the widths and percentages absolutely bang on, and this can take hours of work and practice. Therefore, you should get used to using float as a tiny helper for just magnifying and perfecting little changes to your site. It’s far too delicate a tool to be used commonly and leaves your website open to being an absolute minefield later for technicians looking to optimize your page.

If you still need some help learning or trying to use the float property , we can help. Design Web offers not only websites for your business, event, school, or group, we also offer training and classes in web development.

Google, Help Me Know What I Don’t Know

It occurred to me that I don’t use Google the way I used to just a few years ago. I remember using Google, Yahoo and Dogpile (I’m showing my age here) to actually find “new” stuff, sometimes plugging random keywords, hitting the ‘lucky’ button and seeing where it might take me. This was, however, waaaay back in the day, when the web was in it’s infancy; small and unsophisticated enough to delve through fairly successfully with a basic search tool like Google.

Now I know referring to Google as a “basic search tool” is like referring to Mt. Fuji as a pretty good sized hill. Don’t get me wrong, I know Google has been an extraordinary pioneer in web search technology, but there is something lacking. Sure, I’m generally able to find what I’m looking for but, that’s it – and I’m kind of over it. Forgive me if I’m starting to sound a bit like Veruca Salt, but I want more. I need, dare I say it, a bit of omnipotence, and I know that Google is the only one out there with the ability and the opportunity to make that happen.

Honestly, I don’t think I’m setting the bar too high. If Target can predict when I’m pregnant just from looking at my rewards card data, surely Google can predict a whole lot more. Despite the roll out of all new ranking algorithms, and the seemingly endless variety of Google products I use daily, they are seriously falling short on one major platform: finding the things I don’t yet know I need. Let’s be really honest here too, we know they can do it. So what’s the hold up? Are they worried about creeping us out, because at this point I’m pretty sure that those of us still Googling away have just come to accept the old panopticon and we are ready to take it to the next level start reaping the benefits.

Think of what they could be doing for us with the information they have. To be quite honest, I’m just disappointed. At this point, Google has enough information on me that they can pretty much predict exactly the right day of the month to sell me chocolates and Motrin, and they can efficiently monetize that resource. All issues of data mining and privacy aside, all I can think is, “Man, what a waste,” It’s like Superman using his powers of flight to open a pizza joint, or using his x-ray vision to move up in the ranks as a TSA agent. Lame. Small potatoes lame. Yes, small potatoes, targeted advertising may be making Google a mint right now, but think of how much more they could be doing. How much more ingrained into our lives, (and thus more valuable) they could be given what they know about us.

For those of us ready to opt in, Google data mining could provide an incredible window into who we are and what we really need. On a basic level it could just help us find the things we didn’t know we needed. So I mentioned in the beginning that I don’t use Google to find “stuff” anymore, and I don’t. It’s not as fruitful as say, Reddit, where I can tailor a “front page” feed of news and content I want to see everyday, or Pandora, who actively seeks out and offers new music to me based on what they know I already like. Granted, Google does offer a personalized search option, but it’s pretty meh. All it does is reduce the rank of things I haven’t yet shown any interest in, which, in my opinion, makes my searches less effective and not more efficient. Google also offers an alert system, which is more on track with what I’m looking for, but misses by a long shot because you have to proactively request each unique alert. If I don’t know what to put in an alert for, then it really doesn’t help me know what I don’t know.

I want a more holistic approach. I want my optimized ads to not be ads at all, but little gifts and suggestions just for me. For example, Google knows what bands I like. They can easily mine that data based on my Google searches, my Youtube history, shows I have checked-in at and even from my calendar and the content I share with Google+, or my public history on other social platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Now wouldn’t it be nice if Google looked at my profile and said, “Hmmm, she really likes bands on the Temporary Residence label,” and automaticly created a little alert for me when new records come out or a tour comes to my area. Perhaps they could display the alert where they normally display my optimized ads.

This may sound counter-intuitive because advertisers are paying to be in that space. Why would anyone in their financially sound mind reduce the amount of advertising space they get and fill it with free advertising for non-paying entities? Perhaps because it would make that advertising space all the more valuable. You see, I don’t look at ads. Feel free to scoff, but I don’t. Most regular web users don’t either and studies show that ad space online is generally not a great investment. What if that space actually had a few tidbits of “reliable high quality content,” to quote Matt Cutts, blended in? I would look! Heck, I would open an entire page of these suggestions and peruse the entire gallery ads and all. I would go back to Googling for fun just so I could tweak the quality of my suggestion gallery, kind of the same way I tweak my Pandora account. I would also invest considerably more into Google Adsense campaigns and suggest my clients do the same.

Bitcoins, Litecoins and Namecoins: Using Them For Your Business

Have you heard about Bitcoins or cryptocurrencies? They are the hot, new investment trending in the news today. Bitcoins are being called “the currency of the Internet.” If you have a website that sells goods or services, then it is probably a good idea to start accepting Bitcoins, and possibly some of the other altcoins out there. What are cryptocurrencies and how do you start accepting them on your site? Well, it is incredibly easy to set it up.

Bitcoin

Bitcoins(BTC) are a digital currency which was created in the year 2001 by Satoshi Nakamoto, which is most likely a pseudonym. No one knows who actually created Bitcoins. Bitcoins are based on open source software, which means it is open to be used by everyone and there is no central party that has control over it, including any Government entity. It is a digital currency, sometimes referred to as a cryptocurrency, which is owned by no one and uses peer to peer networking and cryptographic proofs. Any Bitcoins that you own can be saved in a digital wallet, which is hosted on your computer or to third party website like Blockchain. Anyone who has a Bitcoin address can exchange or trade the coins with you. Bitcoin can be used as virtual money which you can accept on your website the same way you would accept a credit card. The benefit is that there is no processing fee. The Bitcoins are transferred from one wallet to another seamlessly. This has led to many merchants, including big names like Subway and Overstock.com!

Litecoin

Litecoin(LTC) is the second-largest cryptocurrency behind Bitcoin and was created in an attempt to improve upon Bitcoin. Litecoin uses scrypt in its proof-of-work algorithm: a sequential memory-hard function. Unlike Bitcoin, Litecoins are designed to be mined using the CPU instead of the GPU or an ASIC miner, however, there are new ASIC miners coming out that will have the ability to mine Litecoins. Litecoins are kept in wallets and traded similarly to Bitcoins.

Namecoin

Namecoin(NMC) is an open source transfer system based on the Bitcoin technology. Namecoin allows you to securely transfer arbitrary names, attach data to the names and you can also use Namecoins in trade and the transactions. Even though Namecoins are meant to be used as a decentralized DNS, they can also be traded as currency. They allow domain names to remain uncensored by creating a new top level domain outside of ICANN control. This help to prevent internet censorship, as well as reduce outages.

More and more businesses have started accepting Bitcoins for the goods and services they deal in because the traditional payment methods have high transaction fees and is easier to accept on a website than credit cards. Bitcoin also allows for anonymous transactions. Bitcoin is like peer to peer virtual cash which can easily be transferred as payments over the internet. You can accept Bitcoin just as any other legal currency, like paying in dollars, yen or euros.

You can easily start accepting Bitcoins for your business by starting with a sign on your door or image on your website. You can let your customers know that you have started accepting Bitcoins with an image on your website saying ‘We Accept Bitcoin’. The advantage of this sign is that even if there are hardly any people using Bitcoin, you will create awareness and also influence your customers to trade in Bitcoins for future transactions. It is a conversation starter with your clients and customers. They will be aware of the fact that there is somewhere where they can spend their Bitcoins and may come to you over a competitor who does not accept cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoins, Namecoins and Litecoins achieve value from trading and use, just like the stock market and normal currencies. Bitcoins are “mined” by people with both home rigs and businesses with massive ASIC miner setups. Mining and trading in Bitcoin is on the rise the globe thanks to the increase in ASIC mining chips and devices.

Bitcoins need to be stored in an online wallet via a computer program or a third-party website. You can participate in the Bitcoin network as soon as you have created your virtual wallet. You would need a person’s identification number to send, receive or transfer Bitcoins online. The complete processing would take anything from a few minutes to an hour after your transaction has been thoroughly identified. Most transacations are verified once very quickly, in roughly the same amount of time it takes to verify a credit card transaction. The money is then transferred to your wallet once the transaction is completely processed.

The value of Bitcoin is very highly unstable and uncertain due to a lack of government interference over the transactions and traders who manipulate the price using computer algorithms and automatic computer trading. This is not dissimmilar from stock market trading and the stock traders who participate in high frequency trading. People prefer transacting in Bitcoins, Litecoins and Namecoins since these transactions are just like cash and doesn’t leave a trail like checks or credit cards. The taxpaying system has not been defined yet for these transactions.

At Design Web, we proudly accept Bitcoins, Litecoins and Namecoins as transaction fees. We can help you to set up your web site to accept these cryptocurrencies, as well as credit cards, Dwolla, Paypal, or traditional cash and check payments. Contact us if you are in need of web design or web development and we can help for just a Bitcoin or two!

The Future of E-commerce and Bitcoin

Every week, it seems, that there are new advancements in technology and innovations made across various industries. The modern world does not only make it easier for people to obtain information with just a few clicks, but it has also created various ways to obtain services that they want in an instant. Moreover, a lot of innovative alternative forms of payment have been introduced all over the world to keep up with the increasing demand of online shopping, gaming, and e-commerce. A lot of alternative currencies also exist these days to help consumers make purchases online; the primary “cryptocurrency” being Bitcoin.

Understanding Cryptocurrency

As we discussed last week, cryptocurrency is a reliable digital currency that is managed and created using innovative and advanced encryption techniques recognized as cryptography. Bitcoins and other alt-coins use cryptography essentially for security with a peer-to-peer platform in order to trade and exchange the currency. With the creation of Bitcoins, cryptocurrency has made the leap from being an academic concept or idea to a virtual reality.

The subject of Bitcoins and cryptocurrency has been obtaining mainstream attention, and, in spite of some of the recent issues concerning Bitcoins, its growing visibility and success since it was launched has actually resulted in various other alternative cryptocurrencies, including Litecoin, Ripple, Peercoin, and Namecoin. These cryptocurrencies may seem the same, but Bitcoins still serve as one of the most efficient among these cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin allows the entire function of transaction verification and processes, as well as currency issuance, to be collectively carried out by a network. This cryptocurrency is also offering a lot of unique advantages over those traditional fiat currencies. Many people have been using Bitcoin for various reasons, such as:

Independence: Bitcoins are not actually tied to any fiat currency, and these are also not controlled by the government policy. Virtual currencies are also outside political control.
Privacy: One of the most notable advantages of using Bitcoin is that users have the ability to transfer their own money between their virtual wallets to another user’s wallet without any identification required. This offers a strong level of privacy to Bitcoin users. This isn’t actually to say that Bitcoin in entirely anonymous – entire transactions are being logged into a blockchain or a permanent public ledger.
Reliable Transaction Fees: Transferring money is really expensive. Credit card or routine credit transactions may cost merchants 2-5 percent of such transaction in fees. Bitcoin enables all users to transfer Bitcoins for free, regardless of whether the transaction is made locally between their virtual wallets or around the world.
Security: Those who worry about losing their money with the use of cryptocurrency can always have an assurance that cryptocurrency is totally secure and safe. The benefits of Bitcoin over a banking system are also greatly significant.
Freedom: With Bitcoin, you are not tied to a long list of rules and regulations, like you would have with a bank account. You are not required to have a wallet to store your money, and, if you do have a wallet, you can withdraw money at any time. The number of transactions are not limited. Transactions are speedy and reliable – about the same amount of time taken by a typical credit card authorization.

Some Places that Accept Bitcoin

Due to its ever increasing popularity and efficiency, cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin has immediately become a reliable and legitimate payment options for various retailers from different parts of the globe.

As a matter of fact, the University of Nicosia, one of the largest private universities in Cyprus, is now accepting Bitcoins. For this reason, students who are attending the university can already pay their tuition fees with Bitcoins. The university revealed that this is due to the demands of international students who are experiencing difficulties in paying for fees with the use of the traditional banking services that aren’t always easily accessible for them.

Recently, Overstock.com, a very large online retailer, has announced that they will begin accepting Bitcoins. This is huge news to anyone who wants to be able to spend their Bitcoins freely on a very well respected and legitimate shopping website.

Some of the thousands of websites that are accepting Bitcoins include Bitcoin Store, eGifter,BitBooks, Zoo York, and the list goes on. There are also a lot of places that you can find in the internet that are accepting bitcoins. There is really no doubt to say that cryptocurrency is starting to take over the world of currency.

Places to Buy and Sell Bitcoins

Due to the increasing popularity and reliability of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency, there are hundreds of websites where one can buy and sell cryptocurrencies. You may even be lucky enough to have a Bitcoin vending machine in your city! There are also websites that help match buyers and sellers up for trading locally with either an online payment or cash in person. If you are trying to buy or sell one of the dozens of cryptocurrencies, you can rest assured that there is a method that will match your requirements.

What does 2014 hold for web design?

The internet has seen a few massive changes in 2013, especially the world of web design. Websites have become more powerful than ever before, and as we enter into 2014, there is likely to be as many changes again this year. Think about it, we have never had the power that we do today – mobile devices, super-fast internet connections, new web design tools – and 2014 looks like it’s going to be an even more exciting year for both web designers and those looking to have a website made.

Here are just some of the trends that we expect to see as we enter 2014:

More Responsive Layouts
If there is one thing that is becoming a commonplace factor in any respectable website, then that is a responsive design for your page. A responsive website is like a chameleon – it blends to fit the environment it is being viewed upon. If you look at it on your PC, it will look a lot different to if you look at it on your Smartphone.
As we enter the year where Google predicted we would have more internet users on mobile devices than PCs, it’s no surprise to see these one-size-fits-all style of websites becoming more common place. Web designers have the tools to adapt their websites to any environment, and this looks to be the first port of call now.

HTML5
HTML5 is finally here, and web designers across the glove are enjoying the new power it has put in their hands. Better support, stronger web standards and CSS3 integration, you can create outstanding animations and elements that take no toll on the websites space or loading time. As we get deeper into 2014, expect animations that actually load when the page opens to become common place. Flash is dead. Long live Flash!

Ajax Becomes Stronger
The power of Ajax, added to the power of HTML5 is going to create shockwaves across the online community. You can now change the URL of your browser without having to reload the page! A simple yet massively powerful tool, this allows you to create a website that loads faster and easier than ever before. This cuts back on HTTP request, and allows websites to run with much less cutter in the background.

It is these coding changes and design edits – the move from big buttons to hover menus, for example – that is going to make the real difference this year. If web standards stay the same, then these new techniques are going to make the world of web design more powerful then you could possibly imagine.
If you are looking to shatter the online world with your presence, there has never been a better time to get a friendly, cool and reactive website that will last you for many years. In the past, web pages have lasted only months before they needed a new lick of paint – these new designs could be here for the longest of terms.

6 Tips for an Effective Small Business Website

If you are a small business wondering if you need a website, here’s the answer – Yes!

A website levels the playing field between you and your larger competitors. A professional, well-designed small business website is the face of your company to online users. When looking at your website, a customer can’t tell if you have a staff of 500 or 5. A small gift shop in Cape Cod selling sea shell wreaths can compete on an even footing with Land’s End (who also sells sea shell wreaths!).

Here are six tips to creating an online presence for your small business:

  1. Before you begin, take a look at other websites in your industry. What do you like, what do you not like. What do your competitors do well? What could you do better? Make a list and plan to address those items on your own site.
  2. When customers access your website, the first thing they want to know is who you are and what you do. Your site colors, fonts, and graphics should mirror the industry you are in and the products you sell. A brief description of what you do should be the first text that customers notice on your home page.
  3. Make sure your website looks professional and attractive, not cluttered. Take the time to plan your site. Draw it out on paper and decide on labels, menu options and navigation structure. Each page on your site may have different content, but every page should look the same and have the same main menu and options available.
  4. Craft your content. Include only relevant information and make sure that information is free of typos, jargon, and grammatical errors. You want to encourage confidence and build trust with your customers. Take the time to think about what you want to say and then make sure you say it well. Also, make sure your site contains more than product descriptions. A blog or newsletter is a great way to add a personal touch and give a “face” to your company.
  5. Determine what keywords you customers will use when searching for your products. Effective Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will give your website a higher ranking, the best way for customers to find you.
  6. Include a map. Make sure that it’s easy for local customers to find you. Google provides a very easy tool that will help customers pinpoint your location.
