The Hare & The Crow is a hand-dyed yarn shop based in France, selling online through Shopify. The owner had already built a detailed library of product data: 175 colourways, each yarn base with its fibre content, weight, needle sizes and gauge, plus care notes for every base.

The goal was simple to say and tricky to build. When a knitter picks a colour or filters by weight, the store should take them to the right product. The owner also wanted one place to keep all of that information, so she could update it herself without touching theme code or waiting on us.

Yarn is one of the hardest products to set up in Shopify, because shoppers care about so many details at once. We audited the existing product and variant metafields and found that much of the data sat inside metaobjects that Shopify’s filters cannot reach. Our plan keeps the rich content, like care and gauge notes, in the yarn base entries. The details people filter on, such as weight, fibre, gauge and needle size, move up to product and variant metafields where the filters can see them.

We also mapped weight, colour and fibre to Shopify’s built-in product taxonomy, which gives the store those filters without extra custom fields. The colourways were set up for grouping into colour families so the swatch filter stays easy to use. For browsing, we laid out a Shop By mega menu in the Impulse theme, built on a clear set of collections.
